Suspect in I-96 shootings charged with terrorism

Posted: Updated:
LIVINGSTON COUNTY (WJRT) -

(12/27/12) - The Oakland County man suspected in a series of random, roadway shootings this fall was back in court Thursday to face fresh charges, including terrorism.

That terrorism charge is not one used often, but one authorities believe is warranted here.

Raulie Casteel once again faced a judge in Livingston County, and once again by video, briefly Thursday afternoon.

The Wixom man already faced dozens and dozens of charges.

He's suspected in 24 shootings, most involving motorists, in Oakland, Livingston, Shiawassee and Ingham Counties. One person was injured.

Casteel now faces seven new charges - including terrorism.

The remaining six counts include assault with intent to murder and five weapon related felonies.

These are the first charges since Attorney General Bill Schuette announced his office would be prosecuting the cases on behalf of three of the four counties.

Schuette called the shootings "acts of domestic terrorism against Michigan citizens."

The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office will handle its own cases. He faces 60 counts there and more than 70 altogether in both Livingston and Oakland counties. Casteel has not been charged in Ingham or Shiawassee Counties.

Casteel is still in the process of being tested to determine competency and criminal responsibility.

The cases will move forward following those results.
