Buena Vista basketball coach forfeits game

BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(01/01/13) - A former high school basketball star is back home - coaching the team he used to play for.

But if his players thought the young coach would be just teaching them the game of basketball, they found out last week that would not be the case.

Tory Jackson says he wants to teach his Buena Vista players the game of life, and he did it with an unusual form of punishment.

"I care about these players like they are my kids," Jackson said.

Sometimes, kids needs a little guidance, a little tough love. And that's exactly what Jackson did last week, when he forfeited the team's game with Shepherd.

"Some of the kids just weren't seeing the bigger picture. To me, it's more than just basketball, it's the game of life," he said.

The game of basketball has been a big part of Jackson's life. The former Buena Vista standout played four years of college ball at Notre Dame. Last year, he played in the NBA's Developmental League, but now has decided to come home, and help these high school players understand what it takes to be successful - on the court, and off.

"If you are not a student first, there is no way you can make it to the next level in the game of life," Jackson said.

Jackson doesn't want to get into specifics on why he felt the need to discipline the players with the forfeited game, but it appears part of the reason had to do with the player's attendance, in school and at practice.

"Grades, school, and if you want to do it, you have to be here, you can't just come when you want," said Eddie Buford, Buena Vista basketball player.

"We have to be role models, make the young kids get here," said Vonta Brookins.

"It's going to make our team stronger as a family," Buford said.

Jackson's point to the players is this - there's a good chance you won't make a living at playing basketball, so an education should be your top priority, and you have to be in school, for class and practice.

Attendance for this practice was perfect.

"It definitely worked, it got the point across," Jackson said.

Even with that forfeited game, Buena Vista's record is three and two.
