Grand Blanc Police to meet with prosecutors about text message joke

Posted: Updated:
GRAND BLANC (WJRT) -

(01/02/13) - It was the first day back at school, after winter break, for many students in Genesee County.

Grand Blanc Schools Superintendent Dr. Norm Abdella says four Grand Blanc High School students did not return. They were suspended following the school shooting text message prank last month.

That prank played a part in the entire county calling off classes for two extra days right before break.

Grand Blanc Police say they intend to submit reports to prosecutors by the end of this week. Prosecutors will determine if and what charges will be issued.

Police have said two students sent texts implying there had been shots fired at the high school on Dec. 19.

They didn't use the same words, police say, and weren't sent at the exact same time, but still caused a lot of panic and big police response.

Schools were already on high alert because of the shootings in Connecticut just days before.

Abdella says four high school students are suspended and one or two could be recommended for expulsion. That will be determined at the next school board meeting, Abdella says.

Abdella says school officials are not alleging the four students worked together or conspired. Some may have just acted inappropriately during the chaos that followed those text messages.

Suspensions can last up to 10 days, Abdella says.
