Trial begins for man charged in Lonnie Houston murder

Posted: Updated:

(01/10/13) - The trial for 21-year-old Steven Ashley, one of the men charged in murder of Lonnie Houston, began Thursday.

Houston's body was found in a burned out car in Saginaw County's Zilwaukee Township in November of 2011. He had been shot twice.

Kaleb Rosin and Brett Vaughn are also charged in the shooting death - but are expected to testify during Ashley's trial for the prosecution.

Police believe the crime started in Bay County.

Prosecutors say Ashley planned to murder Houston. The defense says Ashley should be convicted of manslaughter, not murder.

In his opening statement, Ashley's attorney says his client shot Houston because he believed Houston was going to kill him over a drug debt.
