Flint Police Chief: Deadly funeral shooting was not random

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) -

(01/14/13) - It has stunned the community and the church.

Flint Police are still trying to piece together what exactly happened leading up to a deadly shooting, at the Full Gospel Christian Church, Saturday.

Steven Lawson, 28, was shot during the funeral service for 26-year-old Gerrell Tyler.  Tyler was murdered Dec. 30 near Milbourne and Myrtle. Tyler was Flint's 66th and final homicide victim of 2012.

Flint Police Chief Alvern Lock says Lawson's shooting was not random. Lock says the suspect was inside the church also attending Tyler's service.

"If this doesn't do something to wake up your conscience and say we need to talk, we need to come together, I don't know what will," Lock says.

Police say Lawson was shot in the back of the church and away from the crowd.

Some 200 people were interviewed after Lawson's shooting.  No arrests have been made.

"What happened Saturday is below low," says Rev. Lewis Randolph with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

But, he says he's not surprised.

"With what's happening today, anything is possible," he says. "With the mindset of some of our people, they have no regard, no respect for the church. Everybody (sic) have to be on guard including the pastor," Randolph says.
