Eric Ramsey, the man suspected in the abduction of a CMU student, had an extensive criminal history. He even spent years in prison.
ISABELLA COUNTY (WJRT) -
(01/18/13) - ABC12 was the only station to talk to Eric Ramsey's parents.
He was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy early Thursday morning in Crawford County.
Ramsey had an extensive criminal history. His parents are still shocked to learn that he would rape a college student.
"For anything that he did actually do, I'm sorry for the people that he may have hurt, but believe me, that wasn't the way he was," said Cindy Gimmey, Ramsey's mother.
Cindy and her husband Jerry's last memory with their son, Eric Ramsey, was when they were eating dinner with him Wednesday night. The 30 year old lived with his parents on Crawford Road.
"I just can't believe he's gone. I keep thinking he's going to walk through the door anytime and say, 'Mom I'm here'," Cindy said.
When they got the news that their son had kidnapped a Grand Rapids CMU senior and raped her, they couldn't understand what was going through his mind.
"How? Why? Typical questions. A lot of them we're still trying to get answers for, some of them we'll probably never have answers for," said Jerry Gimmey, Ramsey's stepfather.
The couple says investigators told them that Ramsey brought the CMU student to the home where he lived with them.
Police told ABC12 he put her back in the car and told her he was going to kill her. That's when she jumped out of the car and ran to a home where three kids, under the age of 15, were inside. The oldest let her in.
The CMU student then called 911. Ramsey knocked on the door and tried to burn the house down, but luckily, the homeowner came home and put the fire out.
Ramsey got away, and was eventually shot and killed by a deputy.
"I don't know how anybody would believe it at this point, but he was in no way a psychopath, that wasn't him," Jerry said.
Despite the situation, the couple still wishes they could see him again.
"I miss you, love you. I wish you were here," Cindy said.
