MSP trooper involved in shooting

FLINT (WJRT) -

(01/19/13) - A Michigan State Police trooper was involved in a shooting late Friday night.

It all unfolded near North Saginaw Street and East Alma Avenue in Flint. That's on the city's northside.

State Police tell us it all started with a traffic stop. Three people were in the car, according to a news release from the agency.

A trooper arrested one man on an outstanding warrant.

When he went to talk to the driver, and was searching him, the trooper found a gun.

A struggle then started, and the driver was able to get back in his car. He started driving, with the trooper hanging on to the driver and the car.

The driver then crashed into a tree and a light pole, less than a block away, throwing the trooper from the car into a fence. The trooper landed on the ground.

State Police say the driver then got out of his car, and came toward the trooper. That's when the trooper shot the man. They say the trooper feared for his life.

At last check, that man was in critical condition. The trooper was taken to the hospital, but has since been released.

As it turns out, the driver was wanted on a felony warrant for 'assault with intent to murder'.
