Saginaw celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

(01/21/13) - Mid-Michigan joins the nation in celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In Saginaw, dozens of people braved the cold temperatures to keep Dr. King's dream alive.

This is the fifteenth year the Saginaw Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated has remembered Dr. King by holding a Unity March in Saginaw. King was a member of the national fraternity. Monday, marchers were escorted by the sheriffs department and the police department. They walked from the Saginaw Arts and Science Academy to the Dow Event Center. Each of them with the same purpose.

"We are marching to end violence, marching to reduce poverty, on a national level they talk about jobs and we need jobs here in our community, also we need people to be uplifted in our community, we need people to feel safe in our community, we need things that Dr. Martin Luther King struggled for like justice, peace and justice in our community," said Eddie Foxx, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

The Alpha's also held their seventeenth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon Monday.
