Power restored to Sebewaing Township after strong winds

(01/22/13) - Thousands of people in the Thumb-area had to bear the extreme cold in the dark for three days because of power outages.

DTE says strong winds knocked out power Saturday night. They've been working around the clock to fix the problem.

Crews were able to restore power to all of Sebewaing Township a little after 1 Tuesday afternoon, but customers spent a few days scrambling to find warmth.

"It's always a pain in the butt, especially when it's zero out, it makes it tough," said Joel Fiebig, owner of Countryside Transportation Services.

Most people, like Fiebig, turned to generators for electricity. He rented a big generator to keep his businesses safe from the elements. It cost him a little out of pocket, but he says it's worth it.

"They said the temperatures were dropping fast. You start to have pipes freeze and stuff like that," he said.

At Hair N' More, owner Annette Prich is thankful to have the electricity back on.

"It got cold really fast in the house, really fast," she said.

Her hair salon is connected to her house, and as temperatures outside declined, her concerns grew.

"Our furnace was giving us trouble, so we've had some space heaters and we've gone out to McDonald's quite a bit because we couldn't cook either, because everything in our house is totally electric," she said.

With the lights and heat fully restored, many customers like Annette say they have a new appreciation.

"We appreciate the electricity now more than ever, and we appreciate all of the DTE workers," she said.

Utility companies in Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio helped DTE restore power.

At last check, there were still a few customers scattered across the state without electricity.
