Warming shelters and senior centers across Mid-Michigan were at their busiest Tuesday, as people got out of the cold and into some place warm.
FLINT (WJRT) -
(01/22/13) - The Genesee Intermediate School District says all of Genesee County's 21 districts, and the ISD, were off Tuesday.
That does not include non-public or charter schools. One district had a planned day off.
Some wondered why school was canceled. There was barely any snow, there were no horrible road conditions, but still hardly any school districts in the Genesee County area were in session Tuesday.
Davison was one of the ones closed.
As a result, Lori Mugridge was watching her niece and nephew. She brought them to the Flint Public Library to keep them occupied.
"My phone was ringing and it was their mother asking if I could come watch them. If my car would start in the cold weather," Mugridge says, when asked how her morning started.
They made the most out of their day off just like Flint student Nia'Isha Jones did. She was typing away on a computer midday Tuesday.
"I was in favor it (school) closing," says her mom Shirley Milton. "It's very, very, very cold."
That is exactly why classes were called off.
"Largely related to the safety of the youngsters who have to travel to and from school," says Bob Campbell, with Flint Community Schools.
Those waiting at bus stops, for example, or those who have to walk and walk far to get where they're going, Campbell says.
He's been with the district three years and says this is the first time he's seen classes canceled because of the cold.
"We have to be concerned about the safety and welfare of our students," Campbell says. "We're obviously very mindful of the inconvenience it may put on some parents or guardians, but we can't let that displace the concern we have to have for children's safety and welfare."
