Couple found dead in Monitor Twp. home

MONITOR TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(01/24/13) - We are learning new details about a couple found dead in a Bay County home.

Bay County Sheriff John Miller says it appears it was a murder-suicide, but he says they may never know what lead up to the incident.

The sheriff says 52-year-old Robert Burt and 48-year-old Michelle Pischel were found dead in Robert's Monitor Township home Wednesday.

He believes Burt killed Pischel and then turned the gun on himself.

The two were engaged to be married.

Burt owned Boone's Corner Store in Monitor Township. It's next door to his home, where he and Pischel were found dead.

Jeff Gorgle has lived in the neighborhood and shopped at Boone's for 10 years. He says he knew Burt fairly well.

"Very nice guy. I came by the store frequently, talked with him. Whenever I saw Rob, he seemed to be in good spirits, not depressed. He seemed to have a pretty good business there," he said.

Now neighbors in this quiet community are left with a question that might never be answered - why did this happen?

Sheriff Miller says crime lab investigators haven't been able to read a hand-written letter found under Burt's body.

"It's an unfortunate situation. Sometimes people choose to do this. We don't know the reason why yet, if we ever will. There was no sign of struggle or anything," Miller said.

Autopsy results are expected later this week.
