(01/25/13) - Flint Police say a man, attempting to rob a bank, was shot and killed by security guards.
Police have not released his name, but say the man was a suspect in at least two other robberies at the same bank - the Chase Bank branch on Corunna Road near Ballenger Highway.
The deadly shooting happened inside, in the lobby, about 10:30 a.m. Friday.
Flint Police Captain T.P. Johnson says two armed security guards, inside of the bank, first noticed something suspicious outside.
"(The guards) observed the suspect walking across the street, crossing the street wearing a trench coat, and walking in a stilted manner like he had something under his coat," Johnson says. "As he entered the bank, he pulled out a long gun. Security guards raised their weapons, ordered him to halt and he raised his weapon up and was fired upon by the security guards."
Police say a couple of customers were inside of the bank when the shooting occurred.
Chase Bank officials declined comment.
"The police department will investigate and present the findings to the prosecutor's office," says Johnson. "Prosecutor (David) Leyton will make a decision regarding the shooting."
Friday morning, after the shooting, a number of people gathered by the bank trying to figure out what had happened.
"I guess he's (the security guard) just doing his job or something like that," says Francis Charles.
Charles says he banks at the Corunna Road branch where the shooting occurred. "It's kind of scary," he says.
"I think he (suspect) was stupid for not dropping his gun. That's how it go (sic)," says Ron Cardwell.
ABC12 has left messages for the security company. Our calls have not been returned.
Family members started arriving at the bank about an hour after the shooting.
"I guess that's his mind or whatever. Something clicked in his mind," says Fred Brown Jr. He says he's the suspect's brother.
Brown says his brother has had problems in the past.
"Yeah, he's been in trouble a lot of times, but he's a pretty good guy," Brown says.
