Mid-Michigan homes, businesses damaged from flooding

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -

(01/29/13) - Heavy rain, melting snow and unseasonably mild weather created a very soggy day across Mid-Michigan.

The wet weather has water damage restoration companies fielding lots of calls from homeowners and businesses.

With more than a half inch of rain so far Tuesday, on top of melting snow, what was once dry is now very, very wet.

Water that can't seep into frozen soil is finding refuge elsewhere, namely Mid-Michigan basements.

"The rain that we had early this morning and the forecasted rain for tonight, along with the melting of the snow and some of the ice has made for headaches for homeowners," said Brian Morley, of DM Burr Group.

But it's not just homes that have taken in water.

"Hearing all the rain and thunder and lightning, I thought how unusual that was for January. I looked outside to let my little dog out and I let him out and looked out at the building and there was a lake of water in front of my building, and I thought, 'Oh no,'" said Karen Roberts, of Conquest Deer Farm.

It could be 3 or 4 days before everything is back to normal for the Davison Township deer farm.

One common reason for so much water damage is sump pump failures. Experts say to check them every year.

"If you have contents or a built-out basement, you may want to talk to your insurance agent to make sure you have coverage for what may happen if your sump pump fails," said Todd Bronson, of ServPro.

Although it may be cheaper to 'do it yourself,' it may cost you more in the long-run, if mold becomes an issue.

"On your own, a lot of times you don't get all the excess water, whether it's behind a baseboard, or behind paneling. That's where a professional company, like us, will come in and make sure all your water is extracted properly," Morley said.

With more rain, and then colder temperatures on the way, car damage could be next, with an early kick-off to "pothole season".
