SAGINAW (WJRT) -
(01/30/13) - Saginaw Police have a mystery on their hands.
They are trying to find out the identity of a woman whose body was found near a vacant building. They are also still trying to figure out how she died.
We've learned an autopsy has revealed no exact cause of death for the woman, and more than 24 hours later, investigators are still not sure who she is and where she's from.
"She don't deserve it, to be found like that," said Rae Ann Reis, of Saginaw.
Reis walks along Walnut Street just about everyday, right by the abandoned building where the woman was found. A business once operated there.
"It causes a whole lot of problems, there's people running in and out of there, doing drugs," she said.
Even though she walks by the building everyday, she did not see the body of a woman, lying not far from the street. The discovery was made Tuesday afternoon by someone walking in the area. It's possible the body was hidden by snow, which has now melted. We've learned her body may have been there for more than a day.
Police told Reis the woman is black and in her 50's or 60's. Reis says she has seen someone in the area that matches the description.
"Very nice person," she said. "If I'm outside, she would say, 'Hi, how are you doing?'"
"I can understand why police have a hard time, they can't find a loved one to help identify," said Dan Streeter, of the City Rescue Mission of Saginaw. The rescue mission is about a block from where the woman's body was found.
It's not clear if the woman was homeless, but Streeter says some people have trouble asking for help.
"It's a humbling experience for people to come and say 'I need help,' and so we want to make that as easy as possible to get those services," he said.
Streeter says 110 people took shelter at the rescue mission Tuesday night, and with colder weather moving in, that number could go up.
"Issues like this remind us, a lot of times the homelessness issue is a life and death situation," he said.
The building where the woman was found is in the possession of the Saginaw County Land Bank, and it is scheduled to be demolished.
