(01/31/13) - Downtown Flint is gearing up for a new road race, unlike any it's seen before.
"We're going to have hundreds of people down here in their red dresses and red fashions, and we're going to run down the street. You can walk. You can jog," said Stacy Sawyer, of the American Heart Association.
It's all part of Thursday's Red Dress Dash - a fun run stretching from the Riverfront Banquet Center, all the way down Saginaw Street. It's an event dreamt up by the American Heart Association.
"It's American Heart Month. Friday, Feb. 1 is actually Wear Red Day, so we're kicking it off a little early tonight," Sawyer said.
Whether it's a sparkly dress, or maybe even a short little number, the American Heart Association just wants you to put some red on, and they want to remind you that heart disease is the number one killer for women.
"If we bring awareness and we educate more people about it, I believe we can reduce the number of people who are affected by it," Sawyer said.
The Red Dress Dash ends at Cork on Saginaw, which will be washed out in a sea of red.
"I think it's another fun event for downtown Flint. I encourage everyone to come out and check it out," said Marge Murphy, owner of Cork on Saginaw.
For Murphy, it's a cause that hits close to home.
"There's heart disease in my family, so it's a cause we believe in. We're going to donate $1 to the American Heart Association for every drink sold, and what better way to end than at a business run and owned by women, and red wine is good for you," she said.
The Red Dress Dash begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Participation is free.
