US-23 re-opens after multi-vehicle accident

Posted: Updated:

(01/31/13) - US-23 has re-opened after being closed in both directions earlier Thursday due to a multi-vehicle accident.

The highway was shut down between Grand Blanc and Thompson Roads while crews removed the smashed cars and trucks.

According to Genesee County Road Commissioner John Daly, a car in the southbound lanes stopped in whiteout conditions just before 1 p.m. That set off a chain-reaction accident involving 32 cars.

Twelve people were taken to the hospital. Their injuries are unknown,  but not believed to be serious.

Drivers are calling this one of the scariest things they have ever seen.

"I got off the road and as soon as I was able to get off the road and out of the way, it was just one after another and you could hear these loud slams, one after another, and it kept happening," said truck driver Rick Kline. "People kept getting out of their cars and I was yelling at them to get off the road so that they wouldn't be hurt."

Wreckers were lined up along with emergency crews, side-by-side. Car after car was being towed.

"I got hit twice," said driver Norm Fundt. "They were piled up."

Drivers are calling this a bizarre moment. They said they couldn't see anything in front of them.

"It just happened out of nowhere and someone spun out, and it cause a chain-reaction. It was white and you couldn't see one car in front of you," Kline said.

Volunteers with the Salvation Army were at the scene earlier Thursday providing assistance.
