Business owners talk about major job cuts

Posted: Updated:

(02/01/13) - This week, employees at Dow Corning have been receiving layoff notices. It's the third major company to shed workers in the area.

There have also been cuts at Dow Chemical and Hemlock Semi-Conductor over the last several months.

ABC12 finds out how it could impact the community.

Last month, Dow Corning announced it would cut 500 jobs worldwide.

City leaders aren't sure how many of those jobs will be here in Mid-Michigan, but people are already asking how will this affect the local economy.

As three major companies lay off employees, Diana Butler's coffee shop is bracing for the impact.

"It's devastating. Journey's Coffee House has been here for a couple of years and I've been in Midland for several years and really gotten to know the community and we know that with these layoffs that service is going to have to step it up," she said.

Sid Allen heads the Midland Chamber of Commerce. He's concerned about families that are already being directly affected and about businesses that will take a hit, too.

"Most people who have been around here for a while have seen this happen before. It's just a business cycle that happens. Unfortunately when you're going through it, it's very painful for the people, for the community," he said.

Bo Brines has been in downtown Midland for 17 years. He doesn't believe the cuts will hurt his outdoor supply shop, Little Forks Outfitters,

"I've been growing my business for the last few years and I don't see any reason that I won't continue doing that. Downtown Midland is growing. It's a concern, I think we'll get through this as we have other periods like this," he said.
