(02/06/13) - There's plenty of buzz inside the Saginaw Sting's Bridgeport office. Friday night, the two-time defending Continental Indoor Football League champs open their season against Marion at the Dow Event Center.
"We're excited to try and three-pete. We're excited from the momentum of last year to have had 4,100 people in the stands," said Stuart Schweigert, Saginaw Sting co-owner.
Close to 2,000 tickets have already been sold for opening night. Before kickoff, the Sting will hold a tailgate party, raise their championship banner, and receive their rings. American Idol contestant and Bridgeport High School alum Charles Allen will sing the national anthem.
"It's going to be highly energetic. We'll have a lot of time outs where we'll bring people down from the stands. When the balls go in the stands, you get to keep them. After the game, come down and get autographs. It'll be a good family fun event for $10," Schweigert said.
The Sting's ownership group is lead by Heritage High School grad and former Detroit Lion Stuart Schweigert. This year, the group not only owns the team - they own the league.
"I think we'll be OK from a fan base coming to the games and supporting, and from a business standpoint, we have a lot of sponsors on board this year," said Rob Licht, Saginaw Sting Co-Owner.
The plan is to continue with a community-based approach. High Schools that regularly show their support will be in the running to win new football jerseys.
"Last year, Hemlock High School won it and we bought them 55 new uniforms. Last season we gave back $91,000 back to the community through the Travis Mills Foundation, Rainbow Coalition, and Children's Miracle Network. Going 9 and 0 was great, but giving back $91,000 to the community is what we're proud of," Schweigert said.
The Saginaw Sting have a special giveaway planned for fans at their season opener. It's not one of these championship rings. It's something much more personal.
"If you come to the game with an orange shirt on, like this one right here, this fine young man right here will give you a kiss. It's for the best dressed lady. I'm up for that," said A.J. McKenna, Saginaw Sting Quarterback.
