(02/06/13) - Police say the driver lost her balance and got caught under the
bus.
The accident happened in the parking lot of Save-A-Lot, on Saginaw, in Mt.
Morris around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Mt. Morris Police Chief Keith Becker says the bus driver was stopped and after
the final passenger got off of the bus, she did too, to take a quick break.
"It appears she forgot to put the bus in neutral, which would activate the
parking brake, and the bus started moving forward east through the parking lot,"
Becker says. "She tried to stop it, get through the door and try to stop the
bus, at which time she lost her balance."
Becker says she fell underneath the front wheel of the bus. A citizen nearby
tried to pull her out, but was not able to.
The driver was run over and the bus kept rolling through the lot, Becker says.
The bus traveled another 50-60 feet and hit a couple of cars. Those vehicles
likely stopped the bus from rolling right into the front of the store, Becker
says.
MTA General Manager Ed Benning says the woman had been with them five years and
had been a full-time driver for the last three.
Benning says they've never had anything like this happen before and they all
feel terrible for her family.
Benning says the bus appears to have been working properly.
Thursday, the woman was identified as 48-year-old Holly Wilson of Davison.
