LANSING (WJRT) -

(02/07/13) - Thursday, in our state's capitol, Gov. Rick Snyder unveiled his budget for the next fiscal year.

He's proposing more funding for education, more money to put more state troopers on the street and a higher gas tax.

In his proposal, Gov. Snyder announced a major investment in early childhood education - $132 million over the next two years and $227 million for k-12. He says that's a 2 percent increase.

The Governor also proposed $1.2 billion in infrastructure costs for roads, bridges and transportation, and the budget suggests investments for veterans, state police, higher education and expanding Medicare.

Gov. Snyder also wants to set aside money to use in the case of forest fires, tornadoes and floods. He is calling for $4 million in the budget to create a Disaster and Emergency Contingency Fund. $4 million would also be added to the fund in 2015. He says the emergency fund would allow Michigan to be financially ready to respond in the case of a natural disaster or state emergency.

The Governor also wants to raise some of Michigan's hunting and fishing license fees. Snyder's plan calls for creating a new "base" hunting license that would cost $10 for most in-state residents. Additional fees would be charged for hunting particular animals, such as deer, turkey and bear. If legislators approve the plan, the department could hire dozens of additional conservation officers.

Gov. Snyder made a big push, Thursday, for saving for the future and creating long-term stability.

"We don't print money like the Federal Government. We need to live within our means. We need to prioritize. There are decisions that need to be made, you can't fund all things, and those things have to have real results. There needs to be value for money, and recognize there's real value with measurements. That's our system of dashboards and scorecards," Gov. Snyder said.
