Police, firefighters team up to help burn victims

(02/09/13) - A unique group of hockey players took to the ice Saturday night.

The 'Battle of the Badges' pitted Genesee County police officers against firefighters and EMS workers. It all went down at Perani Arena in Flint.

Money raised will go to Hurley Medical Center's burn unit.

Flint firefighter Rico Phillips says the competition is a great way to give back to the community.

"The burn unit is a very dear place to a lot of firefighters, EMS workers, and police officers alike, because the victims we take from burning buildings and smoke filled buildings end up in the burn unit. We want to make sure they have the best care possible," Phillips said.

Hurley Medical Center's burn unit is only one of six burn units in the state.

The Genesee County police officers won, 8-6.
