Genesee County educators review recent MEAP scores

MUNDY TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(02/11/13) - The state says the 2012 Michigan Education Assessment Program tests show student gains for reading, mathematics and writing in all grades. Genesee County school officials are looking closely at the results and for the most part are happy with the outcome.

"The news is good. The news is positive. It shows growth. It shows students are doing a good job, that teachers are doing a good job in the classroom," said Mary Behm, Genesee Intermediate School District assistant superintendent for education.

Students around the state from grades 3-9 took a variety of tests to see how well they're learning. In Genesee County, reading skills are approaching statewide averages.

"In grades 3-8, we have gone up in all of our reading area, across the grade levels and actually as we go up we close the gap with the state," Behm said.

Math scores improved somewhat.

"I think we've had some nice gains in math, but math is another area we really need to work on, especially in middle school and high school," Behm said.

Genesee County students lag behind state averages in a number of categories, so educators are excited to see the gains being made.

"Some have more work to do than others obviously, but as a whole, our county has really done a very nice job of not only closing the achievement gap but also show an increase in scores from last year to this year," Behm said.

MEAP will disappear by 2015, and another achievement test will take its place, but educators feel it's important to do well on the test.

"It's kind of like a photo album of your family. It's a nice snap shot, but it's not the whole story," Behm said.
