(02/11/13) - Several big retailers have their eyes on Saginaw County. Vacant buildings near the Fashion Square Mall have become possible sites for businesses looking to expand. That means more opportunities for shoppers and merchants.
Cabela's Outpost will open to the public Thursday, Feb. 14. It's a highly anticipated day for fans of the hugely popular chain. If hunting or other outdoor activities aren't your thing, Shoe Carnival and Party City are also preparing to open in the plaza very soon.
Across the road in Saginaw Township, Ulta Beauty opened recently, and the popular Designer Shoe Warehouse, known by many as DSW, is in the process of opening in the building which once housed Linens-N-Things.
All of the stores will occupy properties that have been vacant for a little while. It's all good news for the local community. Over the past few years, the economy has been slow and officials say development had been going at the same pace. Now, it looks like that pace is picking up.
"Since Cabela's announced its plans, we have been getting probably three or four phone calls a week on properties located along that same corridor, asking for traffic counts, inquiring on certain properties zoning, what uses could be permitted," said Saginaw Township's Planner Bridget Smith.
DSW has not set an open date. Officials say it's likely the area could be seeing even more new businesses in the very near future.
