(02/11/13) - Even though we didn't see any new snow Monday, many kids in
Mid-Michigan enjoyed another snow day.
Nearly 150 schools were closed because of icy, back roads.
Michelle Austin has two kids at the Richfield Public School Academy. They did
not have class Monday, much to her surprise.
"They already had enough days off," Austin said.
"Hopefully they (snow days) won't keep going and they won't have to make it up
at the end of the year," says Carolyn Cooksey. Her son attends school in
Grand Blanc.
"Today he is in school, so we're all happy," Cooksey says.
"When I first started teaching, we were the only district in the county that
held class one day," says Bendle Public Schools Superintendent John Krolewski.
Nearly 30 years later, Bendle had class again on a day when so many other
districts didn't have school.
Krolewski says staff checked the roads early Monday morning and found they were
fine for buses and parents bringing kids to and from school.
"In our case, we're fortunate enough to not have to worry about dirt roads too
much so we were in pretty good shape."
Bendle Schools have used five snow days, according to Krolewski. The
maximum is six and then students have to start making days up in the summer.
