Bay City Western Warriors fight request to replace nickname

BAY CITY (WJRT) -

(02/12/13) - The Bay City Western Warriors are fighting a request to replace their nickname.

A Facebook page was created for alumni to speak out against the Department of Civil Rights, which says Warriors is a Native American stereotype that should not be used.

On the Facebook page, Amanda writes, "If this is wrong, then Wolves and Wildcats are animal cruelty, change them."

Kimberly says, "I was class of 1975. Choosing the name was because of the Native Americans magnificent culture, and to me, that is respect."

Republican State Representative Lisa Posthumus-Lyons is now calling on the Department of Civil Rights to drop its request.
