(02/12/13) - It's one last chance to indulge before Lent. On Fat Tuesday, hundreds of hungry paczki lovers packed Kryzsiak's House in Bay City - all part of Kryzsiak's 16th annual Paczki Palooza Party.
"It's just crazy this day. Here on Fat Tuesday, we call it Skinny Tuesday," said Don Kryzsiak, Kryzsiak's House Owner.
The line was already out the door by 5 a.m.
"I'll get four and go home and deserve them. I'll enjoy them. They're very good," said Richard Matthew, customer.
As always, custard, strawberry and raspberry paczkis were the top sellers - but one "old school" choice also put up surprising numbers.
"We make them because some of the old time Polish were brought up on the prune and they say my grandmother used to always make the prune, and that's the only kind of paczki you can have. It's got to be a prune," Kryzsiak said.
Fat Tuesday means big money for Kryzsiak's - and others as well.
"We do this for the community and for the Salvation Army, it's a fundraiser for their soup kitchens, and they do much for the community. It's great to see people get together for this to support Kryzsiak's and the polish tradition," Kryzsiak said.
By the end of Fat Tuesday, the crew at Kryzsiak's believes they will have made more than 13,000 paczkis. Inside each one is 1,200 calories.
"I think we have mastered it. I don't care where you go. I've had them from all over the country, and I think ours are the best," Kryzsiak said.
And as far as those calories are concerned, customers we spoke with didn't seem to mind.
"I walk a lot on my job. I'm always on my feet, so that's my plan, and sweat pants tonight," said customer Michelle Mayes.
If you're looking for paczkis, Kryzsiak's will be open until 9 p.m.
