(02/12/13) - Two inmates are dead after brief stays in the Genesee County
jail. They died within a couple days of each other.
Last Wednesday, a 54-year-old Steven Menkenzie, of Flint, was
brought in on weapons and drug charges.
Authorities say he acted out and injured himself, while beating his
head against the jail bars.
The inmate was treated at a local hospital, but later was found
unresponsive.
The other man was arrested by Mt. Morris police on a domestic
assault charge over the weekend.
He's identified by police as 44-year-old Robert Singer, and was
jailed with a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
"Because he came in so intoxicated, the protocol we put in is for a
medical protocol, which deals with individuals coming down off that high or that
intoxication," said Genesee County Undersheriff Chris Swanson. "Every 15 to 30
minutes, he's doing checks. He's being monitored 24 hours a day and it was
shortly thereafter the deputy made contact by getting medication to one of his
cell mates and he realized that he was not breathing."
The medical examiner says it appears both men died of natural causes.
Authorities are waiting on toxicology reports to confirm that.
