(02/13/13) - Two amazing kids from the Mt. Pleasant area are once again in the spotlight - this time on national TV.
They are James and Acelin Persyn - the children who helped save the life of a Central Michigan University student, on the run from her attacker, last month.
They, and their father, were on the Jeff Probst Show on ABC12 Wednesday afternoon.
"I opened the curtains and I see a girl standing there," said James in a taped segment for the show.
It was a CMU student who'd just been kidnapped and raped. She'd jumped from a moving vehicle and ran to their home for safety. The kids were home alone waiting for their dad to return.
"I grabbed a hunting knife. I waited by the bathroom door and turned off the light," he recalled.
They all made calls for help while waiting and knowing what was going to happen.
Eric Ramsey was outside pounding on the door and even tried lighting the home on fire before leaving. He was shot and killed by police some 100 miles away hours later.
"I'm not really a hero. I kind of just opened the door for her and helped her out. I wouldn't really say I saved her life. She's the one who took the risk and jumped out of the vehicle. She's pretty much her own hero. She's pretty brave herself," James said.
The Isabella County Sheriff honored the siblings, last week, with his Lifesaving Award for their quick thinking and bravery.
They are the youngest people ever to be honored like this by the sheriff.
