Bay City kidney donor struggling with surgery complications, business could close

BAY CITY (WJRT) -

(02/13/13) - A Bay City man helped save a 10-year-old girl's life, and now her family is trying to keep his dream alive.

We brought you Jessica's story back in November, just weeks before the surgery. Jessica Schwerin needed a kidney, until a complete stranger stepped forward to help.

She's recovering beautifully, but the donor isn't doing so well. He still can't work full-time, and now he's struggling to make ends meet.

"Everything we print is tied into giving back, doing something good," said Brian Martindale.

That's Brian's motto and the namesake for his downtown Bay City store, Karma Inc. Apparel.

True to his philosophy, when he read a newspaper article saying Jessica needed a kidney, he sprang to help.

Everything was OK post-surgery for a few weeks, but Brian got sick. He now has a bleeding stress ulcer, and he can't work full-time.

Brian is too sick to stand for long, and there's a good chance he'll have to close his store.

"I never wanted to be in the position of needing somebody's help, but for us to stay here and investing every dime I have and all my efforts and hours, I can't see just giving up and walking away without a fight," Brian said.

Jessica's family is standing right next to him. They're holding a fundraiser for him Feb. 22 to help keep his dream alive, and the good karma going.

"I greatly appreciate what they're doing. I can't imagine having friends like this who would help me try to stay in business," he said.

The fundraiser will be held from 5-8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22 at Karma Inc. Apparel in downtown Bay City.

They'll have a silent auction, raffle, live music and more.
