Renewed push to reopen hospice center "Brian's House" in Bay County

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY (WJRT) -

(02/13/13) - The Bay County Board of Commissioners is pushing to re-open a hospice center.

Brian's House closed last fall. The hospice center gives terminally ill patients somewhere peaceful to spend their last days.

But McLaren Home Care Group says changes to Medicare reimbursements forced them to close.

Bay County commissioners voted this week to urge McLaren to reopen the center, or a center like Brian's House.

It's something supporters consider a big step forward.

"When you're in a hospital, their job is to care for people that are living and want to continue their life. Taking care of someone in the dying process requires a whole different skill set and we really need someplace to give our people a chance to die with dignity and comfort and supply support for the families there involved with that," said Sue Deford, with Save Brian's House.

Next, the Save Brian's House group is hoping to get the Bay City Commission on board as well.
