(02/14/13) - Thursday, many of us are celebrating Valentines Day - but it's not just the day of love. It's National Donor Day, too.
Last month, we introduced you to the Coleman family who lost their loved one in a car accident.
In Chase's short life, he did something powerful that eventually saved other lives - he registered as an organ donor.
"Seven lives directly and benefited up to 98," said Daryl Jensen, of Gift of Life Michigan.
On this Valentine's Day, Chase's story is being honored again. Feb. 14 is also National Donor Day.
"Some of easiest decision for a family is when they know their loved one wanted to be a donor. They can say 'hey, I know that's what they wanted to do and they can honor their wish," Jensen said.
Hurley Medical Center recently unveiled a donor memorial wall to honor local donors like Coleman. They, like the Gift of Life Foundation, are urging others to register.
"It means that you're providing hope for somebody else that needs an organ transplant or a tissue transplant or a cornea transplant. It really means being able to provide something for someone else in a time of need," Jensen said.
Right now, the list of Michigan residents in need of an organ transplant is long and continues to get longer everyday.
"There are 3,000 people that need a transplant and many, many more that need some sort of tissue transplant," Jensen said.
