Flint students use imaginations to create action-packed comic strip

(02/14/13)  - Two Mid-Michigan art teachers have found a way to get the creative juices flowing in the minds of some elementary students. The teachers got them involved the production of a comic strip from the conceptual stage to publication.

Meet Spark and his two superhero pals, Yeti and Mother Nature. While Spark has been around for years, his new friends sprang from the imaginations of students at Eisenhower Elementary in Flint.

One young man created Yeti.

"It's basically like the Hulk, except he has fur and he doesn't lose his mind when he transforms," said Brandon English, a student at Eisenhower Elementary.

Mother Nature came to life in the mind of a fifth grade girl.

"We had a bunch of ideas for characters and mine got picked," said Kalli Christopher.

"We did a history lesson because the story takes place during the '40s, when GM was manufacturing tanks," said Brian Hackney, the artist who did the pencil sketches and inking.

During a parade, a bad guy makes an appearance.

"The villain, the Invisible Man, steals one of the tanks," Kalli said.

"Spark and Mother Nature and all the other teammates come together and try to take over the Invisible Man and make him stop doing bad things," said Geneva Brewer, a fifth grader.

"We talked about how to write a story. We talked about climax, the build up process, the ending process, how to wrap it up in a conclusion," said Stephanie Hackney, part of the husband-wife artistic team.

The kids' creative work has been published in the February edition of Flint Comix. It's available for free in Genesee, Shiawassee and Saginaw Counties.

All the students in the classroom played a role in creating the story and characters over a seven-week period through a program called Kids Need Art.

"All that imagination they have! That's the best part," Brian Hackney said.

"I had fun doing it and I want to do it again," Kalli said.
