(02/17/13) - St. Charles Chief Barry Dobis was diagnosed with myeloid leukemia last year.
The good news: he's done with chemotherapy and the cancer is 100 percent in remission. But he's not out of the woods yet.
He has a bone marrow transplant scheduled for Tuesday, and his brother, Jim, is the donor.
"Barry will be off work for about a year and Patty has left her position to be his caretaker until he's able to take care of himself," said his older brother Steve Dobis.
They could have to live near the hospital in Ann Arbor for up to four months. To help with those costs, his brother Steve and local police are holding a fundraiser dinner this Thursday.
"The fundraiser is going to really help them out, the friends, the family, the prayers, the support, the community has really been there for my family and for Barry," Steve said.
Steve calls this a blessing in disguise. It's brought them closer to friends, family and their faith.
"Everyday I have some sort of a break down, but it's a positive, a positive cry. I know all of the friends and family and God's presence are looking down on us and our prayers are being answered," Steve said.
The fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. this Thursday at the Hellenic Banquet Center in Saginaw Township.
They'll have baked chicken dinners; take-out orders are $10 and dine-in orders will be $15.
