(02/20/13) - It may be winter now, but soon, there will be a sure sign of
spring.
In less than two months, crews will begin repairs on the Zilwaukee Bridge in
Saginaw County.
Drivers should expect delays and backups since lane closures and traffic
shifts are a big part of the plan.
Michigan Department of Transportation, or MDOT, is reconstructing four miles
of I-75 and improving the Zilwaukee Bridge this year. The project is a $70
million investment.
MDOT says it's important to make these improvements to maximize the life of
the bridge and that stretch of I-75 in Saginaw County. In 2013, southbound lanes
will get the makeover. Northbound lanes are targeted next year.
Traffic will be shifted twice every week to ensure three open lanes during
peak travel time. On Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, southbound lanes will be
shifted to I-75 north.
Northbound traffic will be detoured to Northbound I-675. The rest of the
week, Wednesday - Saturday, lanes are open on I-75 north. Southbound I-75 will
be closed with traffic detoured to Southbound I-675.
"We will be doing pavement reconstruction work on both directions across the
Zilwaukee ridge as well as bridge baring's. The baring's allow the bridge to
expand and contract based on load weights and temperate. Keeps everything
stable," said MDOT Spokesperson Anita Richardson.
MDOT is also replacing the Janes Road bridge. That work is going on now.
Crews are also repairing the Wadsworth Road and CSX Railroad bridges. The
overall project is expected to be complete in April of 2015.
