FLINT (WJRT) - (2/21/13) - Congress has until March 1st to come to a compromise on a new budget, before harsh forced spending cuts go into effect.
Among the cuts, a 5.1% cut to head start education programs across the country. Carol Piechocki, Head Start Director for the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department, says GCCARD is still in budget year 2012 until June 30th. If Congress doesn't re-approve funding before then, GCCARD's head start program will lose about a million dollars.
"We would not be able to serve 150 children that we're currently serving," says Piechocki. "Already we're not really having enough money to serve all the children, so to have to cut 150 more would be a big hardship to Genesee County."
Piechocki believes up to 20 teachers and 40 employees from different areas of the department would have to be let go.
