(02/27/13) - Police say gunfire rang out when two cars passed each other on
31st Street near Walnut, in Buena Vista Township, at around 10:30 Wednesday
morning.
The shooting happened just a couple blocks from the police station.
A man and a pregnant woman, both in their early 20s, were shot near the man's
home on 30th Street near Walnut. Police say the pair were in the car, and were
driving on the next street over, when another car drove by. Gunshots came from
that second car.
"They do not look to be life-threatening at this time," said Sean Waterman,
Buena Vista Interim Police Chief. "It looks like five or six were fired that I
could tell by the damage to the one vehicle."
Both people in the first car were injured, but the driver was able to drive
around the block and get to his house. Both ran into the home, where they called
911.
As far as what started the shooting, "That's a possibility that there might be a
money issue here involved," Waterman said.
Sidney Rush was also driving in the neighborhood when he heard the gunshots.
"So it's sad, but it's kind of normal now," he said. "I heard a couple, but like
I said, I looked around, I was like, my natural instinct was to get away from
the area, because I didn't know, if bullets would be stray, hit by a bullet, I
don't want to die."
Mark Howard, who lives in the neighborhood, connects the gun violence to the way
youngsters are raised.
"I'm glad my kids or my grandkids are not around," he said. "Parents, they are
not very respectful, so you can't expect the kids to be very respectful either."
Police have a person on interest in custody.
