BAY CITY (WJRT) -
(02/28/13) - A popular Mid-Michigan restaurant that's been around for nearly two decades is shutting its doors.
Rudy's Red Lion Diner is known for its breakfast.
The business first opened its doors on Broadway Street in Bay City before moving downtown nearly four years ago.
It also had a location on Saginaw Street.
Rudy's Red Lion Diner isn't just a restaurant where people come to get a good meal- it's a place where they have built friendships.
Now this restaurant that's been around for nearly 18 years is shutting its doors for good come Sunday.
"It's sad to see it close. It's too bad because it's almost like a town staple," said Rene Kolka.
Kolka has been a loyal Rudy's Red Lion customer for the past 18 years. The thought that the business is about to close is a big deal to those who come there weekly.
"I've been coming here when it was originally Coney Island and when they lost their old location and they came here. I've been coming here pretty faithfully," she said.
"The first day they opened they were great and they're great right now. It hurts us to have them close," said Rick Rybak, who's also a loyal customer.
A tough economy is making it nearly impossible for the restaurant to stay open.
"The economic climate is not friendly. Let's say that. I've had too many problems and it's obvious my customers love me. I love them. I just can't make it. I've got too many bills," said owner Jana Vanspoor.
Saying goodbye won't be easy for Vanspoor. Her customers helped her get through some of the toughest times in her life.
"I lost my husband when I opened here. Lost my husband, lost my house, losing my business, so if you want to ask me if I'm sad, yes I am, probably well beyond that. I'm losing my customers because they won't be able to see me anymore. They're all like friends and I really appreciate how they showed how much they love us," she said.
Being able to serve is what the employees are the most passionate about. That's why the customers aren't giving up on their favorite diner in town.
"I hope that when I come home that they'll have a new location open up somewhere else. This place has fallen down and bounced back a number of times. I think they have it in them one more time. They just need the right person to come along, give them a good location. People line out the door for this place. People will do it again," Kolka said.
The restaurant will close for good at 2 p.m. Sunday.
