(03/05/13) - It was once an enticement to draw shoppers to some grocery stores - now it's facing an expiration date. Grand Rapids based Meijer is discontinuing "double-coupons" at some of their Michigan and Indiana stores.
Savvy consumers have used "double coupons" for years, to help lower their bills. But those days appear to be coming to an end. Starting April 1, customers at all Meijer Battle Creek and Lansing regional stores, including one in Corunna, will be unable to double their manufacturer coupons. Meijer's current policy allows double coupons up to 50 cents.
Shoppers had mixed reaction to the changes, that first appeared on the Meijer Facebook page, in a response to a shopper's question.
"We don't do a lot of coupon-ing. Sometimes we do if it's a good name brand. Mostly, we use generics because that's what we can afford," says Judy Shultz. Shultz was in town from St. Johns.
"I think that's going to hurt a lot of people because of the tightness that their finances are today," said Owosso native Jill Schiebner.
A Meijer representative said eliminating "double coupons" will allow the company to lower prices, which will help all consumers. They also want to focus on their Internet "mperks" program, including digital coupons which can be used in conjunction with those from manufacturers.
Policy varies from region to region among the nearly 200 Meijer stores in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. For example, in Meijer's home city of Grand Rapids, doubling up on coupons was eliminated back in the 1970s.
"I know for some people it would probably be really hard. I do know a lot of people who do the coupon-ing, but personally I don't, so it wouldn't really affect me," says Corunna native Ashley Mahoney.
Not all Meijer Super Centers are abandoning double coupons. All Flint regional stores, which include Saginaw, Bay City and Midland will still allow double coupons up to 50 cents. No official word on whether more stores will change their policies in the future.
