(03/05/13) - Saginaw Police are investigating an accident that involved a car being driven by a Saginaw County Sheriff's deputy.
It happened around 12:30 at the corner of Harrison and Mackinaw, just two blocks from the sheriff's department.
A witness says the deputy's car went through the stop sign.
"Coming up on the scene, we had information that there were children in the vehicle, sheriff deputy's car involved," says Saginaw Fire Department Lieutenant Jim Fourman.
The Saginaw Fire Department was on the scene shortly after the crash at the corner of Mackinaw and Harrison, on the city's westside, just down the street from the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department. The female driver of the car was trapped inside.
"She was wedged in there pretty good, we had to make a couple of cuts and roll the roof back to get her out," Fourman said.
Police were able to get the three children out of the SUV shortly after the crash and any injuries they had were minor.
"The driver of the van we're much more concerned about," says Noel Wagner, medical director for the Saginaw County Medical Control Authority. "We didn't have any contact with the deputy, after the patients were transported to the hospital, the deputy went to the hospital with the sheriff's department."
It appears the deputy was not injured.
"You could hear the kids inside, and the cops started climbing in to get the kids out," says Robert Podelski.
He actually saw the accident from his porch.
"I was waiting out here for a friend, the sheriff came speeding by, and ran the stop sign, smashed into the car and it flipped onto its side," Podelski says.
Investigators have not confirmed how the crash happened at this point.
No word on the condition of the woman who is at the hospital.
