Record breaking week for stock market

(03/06/13) - The Dow Industrial is having a record breaking week thus far. And for the year, stocks are up nearly 8 percent - that's also good news for investors.

UM-Flint economics professor Chris Douglas is cautiously optimistic about what he's seeing on Wall Street these days. But it could mean the future is looking better than ever. "The stock market has been on the rise for the past several years now."

On Tuesday, investors saw a big pay off when the Dow Jones Industrial Average set a record high, surpassing the previous mark set in 2007. "Part of that reason is that in terms of economic output of where we were prior to the recession, the housing market has recovered a bit."

Professor Douglas said the stock market surge comes after Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke testified on capital hill last month. "He made a pledge of what's going to happen three years from now. So the stock market looking three years forward says oh great more quantitative easing, it will boost stock prices, let's go ahead and buy stocks now."

But even with the latest rally consumers still should be cautious. "I think what people need to avoid is buying high and selling low because that's the first rule of what not to do investing in market, but emotionally that's the easy thing to do. Even though it is forward looking it's still just a guess."

The Dow ended Wednesday up 42 points.
