(03/07/13) - Flint Police and Michigan State Police have received a very special gift from Mickey Mantle's family, thanking them for returning a stolen ring.
It was a sentimental piece of baseball memorabilia, a career ring, taken from Mantle's son's home in Texas years ago.
As ABC12 reported in January, investigators here tracked it down in Flint, then Port Huron and finally Canada.
"When the family said they'd like to send us a little memento? We expected a small picture," said Flint Police Captain T.P. Johnson.
What they received Wednesday was far more than that - a limited edition Mickey Mantle lithograph.
"It's very cool," Johnson said.
It will soon be on display somewhere the public can enjoy it, possibly in the lobby of police headquarters.
"This was all the work of Lieutenant (Marcus) Mahan and Detective (David) VanSingel from the state post. They worked very diligently to negotiate the return of this property," Johnson said.
"We didn't ask for any reward. In fact, we told them it wouldn't be necessary at all. They went out of their way to show how much they appreciated it," Johnson said.
The post commander at the state police in Flint tells ABC12 a lithograph was sent there as well.
They also think it's pretty cool.
Gaines Jewelry helped ship the ring back to Mantle's son in Texas.
