(03/07/13) - A rocky Bay City road is getting some much-needed care, but nearby businesses are worried about their bottom line.
Starting next week, MDOT will start a major construction project.
Shops and stores along the way have been preparing for detours and delays, but they're still nervous.
Crews will be completely restructuring M-18 and M-84. It will affect Salzburg Avenue, from Euclid to the Lafayette Bridge.
"When we're done we're going to have brand new curb and gutter, driveways and sidewalks and decorative lights," said Jack Hofweber with MDOT.
MDOT is doing the project in sections, so parts of Salzburg Avenue will be closed all summer. For businesses, that could spell trouble.
"We have new people almost every day that come in, as well as our regulars, so it's a concern," said Kay Salogar, co-owner at Lindsay Truffler.
MDOT held a meeting to answer questions and concerns. Nancy Schafer owns Wedding Daze on Salzburg, and she's not only worried about business during construction, but after.
"I just found out there isn't going to be parking on this side of the street, it'll be on the other side, my customers will have to cross three lanes of traffic," she said.
Schafer isn't sure her business will survive.
"I might as well start looking for a new place right now because I'm not going to go through the construction and not have parking," Schafer said.
But others are looking forward to a smooth ride once it's all over.
"I think it'll be good in the long run, we just have to grin and bear it while we go through it," said Jerry Crete, owner of Ideal Party Store.
