Sen. Stabenow reacts to Levin's announcement

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WJRT) -

(03/07/13) - Michigan's junior U.S. Senator, Debbie Stabenow, says she is disappointed Sen. Carl Levin will not seek re-election in 2014.

From her office at the U.S. Capitol Thursday evening, Stabenow told ABC12 Washington Correspondent Ted Fioraliso she got the news from Levin over the phone.

"I certainly respect his decision.  He and his wife, Barbara, have made this decision together," said Stabenow.  "I know he's going to work very hard over these next two years, but he will be greatly missed."

When asked for her thoughts on why Levin made his announcement now, Stabenow responded, "I think that's an example of Carl really thinking about other people and giving them the opportunity to think about running."

Although Stabenow has only served with Levin in the Senate since 2001, they've known each other for many years.  She says Levin didn't just focus on the issues in Michigan, but national issues as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"Carl always starts by talking about the troops. It's about the men and women who serve. He has such tremendous admiration for them. He fights for them everyday."
