Federal money is available to head off foreclosure

FLINT (WJRT) -

(03/11/13) - For the past two years, a state and federal program has helped Michigan residents who were facing foreclosure. Now, it's being expanded, and members of the clergy are being encouraged to spread the word.

In Genesee County, about 3,000 home were lost to foreclosure last year. The heartache associated with the loss can be avoided. The federal government has earmarked $500 million for Michigan homeowners at risk of losing their homes. It's being administered by Michigan State Housing Development Authority through the Step Forward program.

"It's embarrassing to people, even though it shouldn't be. It's not they're fault that they're in that situation," said Deb Cherry, Genesee County treasurer.

In Genesee County, clergy members are being asked to show a video to their congregations that explains the foreclosure avoidance program.

"When pastors get involved in a social crisis like this, it makes the person who is going through it, having difficulty paying for their mortgage, realize there are others who care about them and understand," said one pastor speaking on the video.

I've seen the anguish and the pain of those who are in the midst of foreclosure and those who have already lost their homes," said Rev. Ira Edwards of Damascus Holy Life Baptist Church in Flint.

Rev. Edwards believes about half his congregation is having trouble paying the mortgage or paying property taxes. This new money coming from Washington will be greatly appreciated.

"Once they know you're willing to listen to their problems, they will come and talk with you about their problems," said Rev. Edward.

The money given to pay property taxes can be used to pay police officers and fix roads.

If people get their taxes paid, first of all it brings money into the local units of government. It keeps people in their own homes," Cherry said.

Several members of the clergy say they will make sure financially troubled parishioners are aware of the available help.
