Special primary election Tuesday for 27th District Senate seat

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(03/11/13) - Genesee County voters will head to the polls Tuesday for a special primary election to begin the process of selecting a new state senator.

The seat was left vacant by John Gleason, who was elected county clerk in November.

"The district is a mixed bag, as it includes the city of flint and a number of western townships in the western parts of county," said political analyst Paul Rozycki.

It certainly is a mixed bag of candidates, as well, vying for a spot to move on in May.

On the Republican side - retired business owner Robert Daunt and customer service representative Adam Ford.

Five Democrats are hoping for your vote Tuesday.

They include - State Representative Jim Ananich, General Motors employee Chris Del Morone, Genesee County Commissioner Ted Henry and State Representative Woodrow Stanley.  You will also see Lawrence Woods on the ballot, but he has since issued a statement saying he has dropped out of the race.

Regardless of who moves on to May and who is elected then, it ultimately means one more voice for Mid-Michigan.

"But the odds are very good it will be a Democratic voice," Rozycki said.

Rozycki said the winner of the Democratic nomination is all but certain to win the district in the general election, as has been the case is past elections.

"I think it's mainly an Ananich/Stanley race and what's really happening, I think, is the district should probably favor Ananich normally, but the fact is some of the other candidates may pull some votes away from Ananich, so it could be a very competitive race in particular because it's going to be a low turnout."
