Flint school board explores options to fix budget woes

FLINT (WJRT) -

(03/12/13) - Flint Community Schools are facing a big budget problem, and Tuesday night, the school board looked at ways to get back on the right track.

In January, they hired a new Interim Chief Financial Officer.

During a meeting Tuesday, Linda Holloway presented the challenges the board will face while trying to eliminate their deficit.

Originally, the board wanted to submit a Deficit Elimination Plan to the state this month.

But they met with the Michigan Department of Education and decided they will focus on a new goal - eliminating the general fund deficit by July 2016.

The chief financial officer said it will be a lot of work, and everyone will have to adopt a more positive, productive attitude.

"I think the Flint schools could become the architects of change rather than the victims. That's the state we're all in, we either are the architects for our future or we're the victims of our futures," Holloway said.

In order to reduce that multi-million dollar deficit, they plan on significantly reducing the cost per student.

They will continue to talk about this as they develop their next budget.
