(03/13/13) - Durand could grow economically now that it has an option of buy nearly 160 acres of land.
The property is on the northeast side of the city, on Lansing Road.
City officials say they don't want heavy industry to locate at the site because the middle school is across the road, but they're willing to entertain other ideas.
"I think we would definitely embrace some light industrial, heavy commercial and then even possibly doing a kind of a combination on the back side of future home development. It's quite a large parcel and it could be divided off to make an option for all different types of development," said Amy Roddy, Durand city manager.
Durand officials will be working with the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership to locate prospective businesses that would like to locate there.
