SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) -

(03/16/13) - The faithful from across Mid-Michigan joined together for a special mass to celebrate the historic election of Pope Francis on Saturday.

The mass took place at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption in Saginaw.

It comes just in time to bless the new Pope before his first blessing in St. Peter's square Sunday morning in Rome.

Bishop Joseph Cistone of the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption led the mass.

"The excitement that is not just in the Catholic church, there is an excitement you can see with the news media, the Catholics and non-Catholics, non-Christians alike. There's something about exciting about the Holy Father. The catholic church and the Holy Father leadership is always up for discussion, sometimes controversy, but it really does draw peoples attention," Bishop Cistone said.
