(03/19/13) - The Flint Derby Girls are ready to rumble - and roll - into their sixth season. The opening bout is Saturday night at Perani Arena.

"It's going to be a massacre. We're going to kick Battle Creek's butt. That's all there is to that," said April Petrusha, 'Feisty Filly'.

The team practices daily at Rollhaven and is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. This year's roster features an eclectic mix.

"We are cute, quaint, loud, crazy, wild," said Kimberly Mills, 'Freakenstein'.

"We do have a professor, we have an accountant, we have electricians, beauticians, nail techs," said LuAnn Rase, 'E-Rase Her'.

Recruiting is underway for more referees and players. New this year, a junior derby program known as the Atomic Cupcakes. It's for girls ages 8-17. They'll learn the sport, and perform at halftime of games.

"There's no distinct Derby Girl type. If you're looking to have fun and push yourself, that's about the only requirement," said Nick Cotton, Flint City Derby Girls Coach.

There is one other requirement - a tolerance for "minor" aches and pains.

"Broken legs, and compound fractures. Other than that, it's been small bruises here and there," Rase said.

The Derby Girls do have a softer side. They're launching a season-long fundraising initiative.

"The YWCA Safe House will be at all of our home games. We collect different things for them, and we also donate from our kids zone," Rase said.
