DETROIT (WJRT) -
(03/19/13) - Collaborate, create and connect were the themes of the
Governor's Economic Summit.
More than 700 educators, business and government leaders met in Detroit
Monday and Tuesday to talk about the state's economy and how to improve job
growth.
This was one of the first opportunities for all of these leaders to be under
one roof talking about how they can help Michigan and one another.
There were also 20 students there looking for a job opportunity, including
one from Kettering who made a really good impression on employers and the
Governor.
"I think a lot of people my age graduate and get worried if there is going to
be a job for them afterwards, but I think that it shows if you're dedicated and
get opportunities like this and take advantage of them, possibilities are out
there," said Andrew Sierra.
Andrew Sierra will graduate from Kettering in December. He's also a Flint
Kearsley High School alum. His passion is electrical engineering and while at
the Summit walked away with a few job prospects.
In fact, he said he has a couple of interviews set up for later this week.
Andrew, along with 19 other students, presented themselves to the 700-plus
crowd. This was really the highlight of the two-day event to bring together
government, education and business leaders.
Gov. Rick Snyder was also impressed with Michigan's young talent and what
they have to offer. But he believes the state must do better connecting its
talent with the right career opportunities.
"This is a big deal, this is really important, the question of connecting
talent, whatever areas of the country do this the best, because the country does
not do this well, are going to have a fundamental advantage over other parts in
terms of economic growth and job creation and keeping their young people," he
said.
